West Lancashire Yacht Club
West Lancashire Yacht Club is situated on the Marine Lake at Southport, Mersyside. (see Map and Directions).
RYA Champion Club
In mid-1999 West Lancashire Yacht Club won the status of RYA Champion Club (sponsored at that time by Volvo). WLYC is understood to be only the third club in UK and the first club in the North West of England to win this prestigious status. The award is given only to clubs offering the highest standards in all aspects of sailing and sail/race training, together with a proven record of high achievement at both National and International sailing events.

The clubhouse, fully refitted between 1998 and 2001, has two large club rooms, spacious changing rooms with showers, a bar with wet sailing area and a well equipped galley. The site has ample dinghy parking with concrete slipways and mooring; which is believed to be the most civilised launching facilities in the North West!
WLYC holds an Open Day during each season. Members and Officers are on hand to welcome visitors, explain club activities and provide sailing experiences. The Membership Committee are also happy to talk to prospective new members during the day.
All enquiries regarding membership should be addressed to the Membership Chairman. Further details on membership can be seen on our Membership Pages.
Racing is from March to the end of October. Southport Marine Lake is ideally suited for all-year-round sailing and SSC (our neighbours on the lake) provide open Frostbite Racing during the winter months. WLYC club racing is primarily on the Marine Lake on Thursday evenings, with alternate Sunday mornings either on the Marine Lake or on the Sea at Southport (or Ainsdale).
Although the Offshore Fleet is no longer active at Southport because of the poor mooring facilities, we do still have an enthusiastic offshore group with regular meetings in the clubhouse and cruises organised during the summer months.
Currently over 20 boats form the Club’s offshore section. The main offshore activities include:
- The Commodore’s Cruise. The traditional "Commodore's Cruise" is held during mid summer each year with venues chosen from local waters and/or warmer climates.
- Monthly Meetings. October to April inclusive. Meetings are held on the first Tuesday of each month in the Clubhouse, with regular guest speakers.
The club offshore fleet varies between motor-sailors and 40ft cruisers. Most are based in the North West of England (eg. Liverpool Marina), but some can be found anywhere on passage around the world!
Visitors are most welcome – but, first, please contact the Captain or Club Steward..
