Melling Baptist Community Project

In 2008 NWBA (North Western Baptist Association), part of the Baptist Union of Great Britain, which is responsible for 3 million Baptist churches and many schemes worldwide, began a project in Melling, on Merseyside. During the previous ten years, a great deal of new housing was established in Melling, NWBA decided that a Christian presence in the area, working for the benefit of the local community, should be set up. The following pages on this website give an indication of the range of the activities to date.
Jo Hassoun who was born and raised in Maghull became the Project leader, and is now well known to very many local people. In addition to all her public activities, Jo has been a valuable support to many Melling residents as they have experienced difficulties in their personal lives.

Hub:
Every Wednesday morning, 10.00 – 11.30am, we meet for coffee or tea, cake or croissant, bacon or sausage barms in the Melling Scout Hall. We are a small group of local people, who just sit around and talk about anything from frogs in the garden to favourite food (not frogs), from the birth of a grandchild to our memorable holidays. We can talk about what’s wrong with the world or last night’s telly. Anything goes! We support each other in our sadness’s or celebrate each other’s joys. If you’re new to the area, or just want a fresh start, pop in, you will be instantly welcomed and made to feel as if you have been with us for years. We’re good at that!

Pops: T

he title stands for ‘Parents Of Pre-schoolers’. Not quite true, you may be a grandparent, an aunt or uncle, or even an older brother of sister. If you have a ‘beeny’ with you, then you qualify!  We meet on Thursdays in the Scout Hall 1.30 – 3.00pm. This is the place to make friends with other people with children, and chat about schools, health services, holidays, or the price of shoes. Anything. There are no rules!

At Christmas we have a Nativity service which must be seen to be believed. During the summer holidays we have a week-long Holiday Club for school children and a crèche for POPS members.
