Apex Charitable Trust

Apex Trust is a Merseyside based specialist charity based in St Helens who supports offenders into employment, training, education and voluntary work.

Apex has a mission to: deliver services that enable all offenders and those at risk of offending to be the best that they can be, to achieve their goals and inspire breakthroughs in the way society treats them. We have been delivering services within Merseyside for the past 23 years. The charity has a long history of successfully delivering outcomes for “hard to reach” vulnerable people not adequately supported elsewhere and has structures, policies and procedures in place to ensure good practice financial management, sustainability and development.

There is no other service that supports ex/offenders in the community as we do.

Our aim is to support our service users within the community to move away from a lifestyle that may encourage offending or re-offending. This in turn strengthens communities, reduces crime, promotes social inclusion and enables the formulation of stronger family relationships.

We do this through supporting our clients to overcome their individual barriers to change that can move clients from dependency on welfare and crime to becoming self-sustaining members of communities. The organisation promotes social inclusion for people who have a history of offending by assisting them to improve their prospects. We aim to help people with a criminal record age 16+ to overcome their individual and personal barriers by providing a range of specialist & proven 1 -1 support programmes.

90% of people we help have multiple problems with complex needs arising from poverty, traumatic life events, mental health problems, drug & alcohol related needs & lack of support networks.

We have identified that our client group responds best when all their needs can be addressed using just the one service and we offer a holistic approach to doing so.

Our experience shows us the ex/offenders often have complex needs that prevent them from moving on or engaging with mainstream services (many of our clients aren’t registered

with a GP).  We will address and support clients who have histories of abuse, trauma, poor educational attainment, mental health, alcohol and drug dependency, low confidence and self-belief. Relationship difficulties can combine with practical problems such as inadequate housing, homelessness and debt. The support they need has to be flexible and holistic. Most of the mainstream services will address the one area that they specialise in. With their chaotic lifestyle, clients cannot cope with linking into multiple agencies. Their non-compliance with mainstream agencies is evident.

If they identify that they feel work ready we assist them to improve knowledge and ability to disclose their conviction/s. We challenge offender’s preconceptions about their prospects for further development & how to achieve them.
